What Is a Short Link and When Should You Use One?

A short link is more than a smaller URL. Learn what it solves, what it does not solve, and how to use it transparently.

A simpler address for a simpler task

A short link is a reduced version of a URL that redirects the visitor to a destination. It helps when a long address is difficult to copy, read, dictate, publish or turn into a QR code.

When shortening is genuinely useful

The first gain is legibility. A long URL may contain paths, parameters and codes that are not useful to the reader. A descriptive alias can also make an address easier to remember, when the service supports it.

What a short link does not do

Shortening a URL does not automatically make the destination safer, faster or more trustworthy. People should still evaluate the destination before entering data, downloading files or signing in.

Good publishing practices

Use readable aliases where appropriate. Avoid deliberately ambiguous addresses. Test links on more than one device and keep an internal record of what each campaign link is meant to do.

A small tool with editorial value

The value of a short link is not only its size. A useful link is clear, stable, easy to share and consistent with the content it points to.
